The shooting happened around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday at the Kroger located at 20355 Cypresswood Drive.
According to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, deputies responded to reports of an active shooter and arrived in less than two minutes.
When deputies arrived, they found one man, later identified as Kaden Ausbrooks, walking out of the store with a gunshot wound. After clearing the building, deputies located a second man inside who had been shot multiple times.
The victim was flown to a local hospital and is in stable but critical condition, according to investigators.
Ausbrooks, who authorities said suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, was also taken to a nearby hospital. Following an investigation by Precinct 4 detectives, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony.
Deputies are guarding Ausbrooks while he receives medical treatment. He will be booked into the Harris County Jail upon his release.
Investigators now believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute between the two men. Authorities said no customers or employees were injured.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing surveillance video from inside the store.
In a statement, Kroger said it is providing counseling services for employees who were working when the shooting occurred.
“We are grateful that no additional individuals were injured during this incident,” Constable Mark Herman said. “The rapid response of our deputies, along with the assistance of our partner law enforcement agencies, allowed officers to quickly secure the scene, provide access to emergency medical care for those injured, and conduct the investigation necessary to file charges against the alleged shooter.”
